Did you know that when a child is placed in the foster system, when they become 18 they are displaced with no funding for housing, a higher education or the basic needs to survive. Most distressing is the lack of a support system to help them succeed and become a productive member in our society. This leaves many foster children aged out of the system at 18 years old more likely to become homeless, desperate to survive, and at a higher risk to use and abuse substances. Our hope is to build a therapeutic farm that allows for the displaced youth to come live and thrive, learn the skills needed to advocate for themselves, learn a trade/skill or advance to higher education. By coming to Lagom they will have access to the best multidisciplinary clinical team that is onsite providing the mental health services needed to overcome the trauma of being a child that grew up in the system. By helping our cause we can give the youth placed into the system a better and more bright future by building a healthy, happy, safe environment & family. A place where they can experience love, safety and pride.
Did you know that the youth from inner cities have a higher rate of accidental drowning? Minority children from low demographics are at the highest risk. According to the Red Cross, 64% of African-American, 45% of Hispanic/Latino have few to no swimming skills.
African-American children ages 5 to 19 drown in swimming pools at rates 5.5 times higher than those of white children in the same age range. 79% of children in households with incomes less than $50,000 have few-to-no swimming skills. Leaving them victims of inner city crimes/violence but also from falling into a pool of water!
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, black children ages 10 to 14 drown in swimming pools at rates 7.6 times higher than white children drowning due to lack of funding for these life saving lessons! If you help support our cause Lagom's Therapeutic Farm will bring cost free swim lessons to the farm saving so many innocent lives!
According to the VA's office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention (OMHSP), more than 60,000 Veterans died by suicide in the last decade. In a pilot program developed by the VA and requested by Congress in 2018, the VA was able to show the power a farming environment has on the mental health and wellness of our soldiers! Many studies have shown that when our soldiers work and spend time within a supportive network of mental health clinicians and their fellow comrades there is an increase in wellbeing and a decrease in self-harm. By supporting our efforts we will be able to build a farm that not only utilizes the power of equine and animal therapy, but gardening, woodwork and all that comes from a farm, but with integrative modalities of providing the mental health services our soldiers need to thrive while in service or out of service.
Sometimes the best possible outcome for our mental health stability is a combination of counseling and pharmaceutical medication. We now offer the convenience of coming to one office for both!
